Bone density measurement

Osteoporosis (changes in the bone substance) can be detected at an early stage using the bone density measurement method. This means that the necessary prophylaxis and treatment can be initiated immediately. A state-of-the-art device is available in our gynecologist's practice for bone density measurement.

Information from your gynecologist on bone density measurement

Bone density is a term that refers to the amount of minerals per square centimeter of bone. Bone density is considered an indicator of osteoporosis and an increased risk of fracture. There is a statistical correlation between poor bone density and higher likelihood of fracture.

Bone density is not the true physical "density" of bone, which would be calculated as mass per volume. Bone density measurement is called osteodensitometry and is completely painless and non-invasive. The device we use is based on the ultrasound method and measures at the ankle. This avoids the radiation exposure of the existing DXA X-ray method.

We recommend regular measurement at the latest when entering the menopause or in other hormone deficiency situations such as anorexia.
