Desire to have children and in vitro fertilization/artificial insemination
In vitro fertilization (IVF) refers to artificial fertilization outside the body, i.e. in the laboratory. The aim is to achieve a larger number of follicles in the ovaries by treating the woman with hormones. The egg cells mature in these follicles. During a follicular puncture in a fertility center, eggs are retrieved from the follicles. The eggs are then combined with the man's sperm cells - fertilization outside the body. In another minor procedure, the now multicellular embryos are transferred back into the woman's uterus in a process known as embryo transfer. There they continue to develop naturally. As a rule, a maximum of 2-3 embryos are transferred.
