The Papanicolaou test (Pap test) is a method of early detection of cervical cancer. It is intended to detect potential precancerous and cancerous processes in the cervix at an early stage. Critical findings are often supplemented by more sensitive diagnostic procedures in order to be able to take the necessary measures to enable prevention or prevent the progression of cervical cancer.

A Pap smear is performed by opening the vaginal canal with a speculum and collecting cells at the outer opening of the cervix. The collected cells are examined under a microscope. The test aims to detect potentially precancerous changes caused, for example, by sexually transmitted human papillomaviruses.

The test remains an effective, widely used method for the early detection of precancerous lesions and cervical cancer. The test can also detect infections and abnormalities.
